Why Pet Urine Smell Keeps Coming Back
Most people have already tried something before they ring us — supermarket spray, vinegar, a hired machine, bicarb left overnight. It works for a day or two, then the smell is back, usually worse on a warm or humid afternoon.
That happens because urine does not sit on top of the fibre. It soaks in, and as the moisture dries off it leaves behind salts and other residue bonded into the carpet or fabric. Those salts draw moisture back out of the air, and every time they do, the smell comes back with it. Spraying something scented over the top does not touch them. Plain hot water does not dissolve them properly either.
The treatment has to break that residue down chemically first, then physically remove it. That is two separate steps, and skipping either one is why DIY attempts usually fail.

Surface Contamination vs Contamination That Has Gone Through
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you book anyone, because it decides what is realistically achievable.
- Still in the pile. A recent accident, or a small one, that has not reached the backing. This is the straightforward case — enzyme treatment, dwell time, hot water extraction, and the smell goes with it.
- Through the backing into the underlay. A larger volume, or the same spot used repeatedly. The carpet itself cleans up fine and looks clean, but the underlay underneath is still holding urine. Surface cleaning knocks the smell back for a week or two, then it returns. Fixing it properly means lifting the carpet in that area and treating or replacing the underlay.
- Into the subfloor. Months or years of accidents in the same corner, usually on timber or particleboard. At this point cleaning is not the answer and we will say so rather than take your money.
We can usually tell which of the three you are dealing with on site, by the size and edge of the stain, how the backing feels, and how the smell behaves when the area is warmed. You get told before we start, not after.
How We Treat Pet Stains and Odour
- Find the actual extent. What you can see is almost always smaller than what soaked in. Urine spreads outward under the surface, so we work out the real edges first rather than treating the visible mark.
- Enzymatic pre-treatment. An enzyme solution applied to the affected area and given time to work. The enzymes break down the organic residue and urine salts that hold the odour. Rushing this step is the most common reason a pet clean disappoints.
- Agitate into the pile. So the treatment reaches the base of the fibre and the backing, not just the tips.
- Hot water extraction. Hot water and solution injected under pressure and immediately vacuumed back out, taking the broken-down residue with it. Multiple passes over affected areas.
- Deodorising rinse and dry pass. A neutralising rinse, then a dry pass to pull out maximum moisture so the area dries quickly and is back in use the same day.
Pet treatment is quoted as part of the job. We do not add a surprise surcharge on the day for stain work or deodoriser.
Carpet, Couch and Mattress — What Changes
The chemistry is similar across all three. What differs is how far the urine can travel and how much of it we can reach.
- Carpet and rugs. Best case for full removal, because extraction can reach the backing. Wool rugs need a gentler pH and more care with moisture, so tell us the rug type when you call. See carpet steam cleaning.
- Couches and lounges. Removable covers and fabric panels clean up well. The limit is the cushion foam — once urine is in the core of a cushion insert, a surface clean will not reach it and that insert may need replacing. See couch and sofa cleaning.
- Mattresses. Depth is the issue. A fresh accident on the surface layer comes out; one that has soaked deep into the foam or spring layer may not fully clear. See mattress steam cleaning.
- Dining chairs, ottomans and car seats. Treated the same way — see upholstery cleaning.
What We Can and Can't Fix
We do not guarantee stain removal, and we would be suspicious of anyone who does. What we can tell you honestly:
- Odour usually clears where the urine is still in the pile or the fabric, and has not reached the underlay, subfloor or cushion foam.
- Discolouration is a separate problem from smell. Urine is acidic and can strip or alter carpet dye, particularly on wool and on lighter colours. If the dye is damaged, the smell can go completely and a lighter or yellowed patch will still be there. That is permanent dye change, not remaining dirt.
- Old stains are harder than fresh ones but far from hopeless. Months-old marks regularly come out. What matters more than age is volume and repetition.
- Repeat spots in the same place are the toughest case, because the total volume that has gone through over time is much larger than any single accident.

When Replacement Makes More Sense Than Cleaning
Sometimes the right advice is not to clean. Consider replacing rather than treating when:
- the same area has been soiled repeatedly over months or years
- the smell is noticeable from the doorway of a closed room
- the carpet backing has gone brittle or is separating
- the underlay is visibly stained when a corner is lifted
- you have already had the area professionally cleaned and the smell returned within weeks
In those situations a clean can still improve things, but it is fair to know beforehand that it may be managing the problem rather than ending it. Replacing underlay in one affected area is often cheaper than people expect and a far better outcome than cleaning the same spot three times.

Can professional cleaning remove dog urine smell from carpet?
Usually, yes — it depends how far the urine went. If it is still in the carpet pile, enzymatic treatment followed by hot water extraction clears it. If it has soaked through the backing into the underlay or the floor beneath, cleaning the surface will knock the smell back for a while and then it returns on a humid day. That case needs the underlay treated or replaced. We tell you which one you are dealing with before we start.
How much does pet stain removal cost in Sydney?
Pet treatment is quoted as part of the clean rather than charged as an add-on, so the cost depends on what is being cleaned and how much of it. Tell us how many spots there are, roughly how old they are and what surface they are on, and we will give you a fixed price on the phone before anyone comes out.
Can cat urine be removed from a couch?
Often, yes. Cat urine is more concentrated than dog urine and the smell is stronger, so it needs a longer enzyme dwell time. The bigger question is whether it has reached the foam inside the cushion. Fabric and cushion covers respond well. Once it is in the foam core, a surface clean will not reach it and the cushion insert may need replacing.
Will the pet smell come back after cleaning?
Not if the source came out. Smell that returns a few days or weeks later almost always means there is still urine in the underlay, the subfloor or the cushion foam, releasing again as humidity rises. That is a sign the contamination went deeper than the surface, not that the clean failed.
Do I need to replace the carpet?
Not in most cases. Replacement is worth considering when the same area has been soiled repeatedly over months or years, when the urine has reached the subfloor, or when the backing has started to break down. We will say so if that is what we are looking at — there is no point charging you for a clean that will not fix the problem.
Can you treat pet stains before an end of lease inspection?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people call us. Pet clauses in Sydney leases usually require a carpet clean at the end of the tenancy. We treat the affected areas, photograph the work before and after, and give you a tax invoice on letterhead for your agent.
